A bridge is a method of replacing a missing tooth. You may wish to replace a missing tooth for cosmetic reasons or to improve chewing. A bridge will also prevent teeth adjacent to a gap from moving, creating more spaces which are more difficult to clean, leading to further problems.
A bridge uses one or both teeth adjacent to the gap as anchors to hold a false tooth in the gap. The bridge is permanently cemented in place, unlike a denture, and provides a much more comfortable and elegant solution than a denture.
Like crowns, bridges are made of porcelain bonded to metal or increasingly now, all ceramic materials, which provide an improved cosmetic result.
